In the early stages of my Mediumship development, one of the exercises we practised was Automated Writing.
This is the act of allowing words to be written without deliberate thought, analysis, or structure. Instead of thinking about what to write, you simply allow the writing to unfold naturally.
Having opened myself to guidance from my Spirit Guides, I put my pen to paper and sat patiently, waiting for information to be channelled and flow through me. Whilst others in my development group began writing almost immediately, my mind remained completely blank. Apart from the fear of failure that quickly started to overwhelm me, I had nothing.
I remember pleading silently with my Guides to help me — to give me something, anything. But my mind was in a panic, which only seemed to block everything out further. This continued right up until the lady running our group called us to time and asked that we bring our writing to an end. At that moment, I resigned myself to the belief that I had failed the task, and as I did, my mind finally calmed.
Then, from nowhere — just as everyone else stopped writing — my mind filled with words, and I began to write.
What came through was simple: a childlike poem. Just four short lines, but I had something.
Love is like a cloud, all dreamy and soft
Love is like ice-cream, with a cherry on top
Sweet and delicious, enjoyable too
Love is beautiful, just like you.
And I loved it.
Prior to this, if someone had asked me to write a poem, it would no doubt have started with Roses are red, violets are blue and probably ended with something smutty.
Since that first poem, I have channelled well over a hundred pieces from my Guides and Spirit. Even now, it still fills me with a sense of wonder and gratitude every time it happens.
This experience taught me that guidance often arrives when we stop forcing and simply allow. Automated Writing became a way for Spirit to communicate with me that felt gentle, supportive, and deeply personal — a reminder that trust is often more important than effort.
Thank you for taking the time to read.
